Liverpool again qualified for the Champions League semi-finals by thrashing Porto brutally over the two legs by having an aggregate of 6 – 1. No doubt that it was a stronger side of Porto with respect to what it was against Liverpool last year, but still that wasn’t enough.
Jurgen Klopp’s red devils again proved that they have one of the best attacks in the world at present. No team would like to face a deadly attack of Salah, Firmino, and Mane. They’ve qualified for the semis and a bigger challenge is waiting for them as they have to face Barcelona first before they can go to the finals.
Let’s have a look on how they thrashed Porto over the two legs:
Anfield (1st Leg)
It was Anfield which was hosting the first leg against Porto. The Portuguese champions came with a mind full of revenge as they got knocked out by the same side last year.
The match had just begun and it was Naby Keita who scored for his side in just 5 minutes. As a result, Porto was trailing by 1 – 0. Porto couldn’t do much after the first goal and sooner the second goal came from Roberto Firmino in the 25th minute. Porto was trailing by 2 – 0 now.
Though Moussa Marega showed that they could do something and didn’t let their hopes down. But that wasn’t enough since they couldn’t score throughout the match and again lost to the Red Devils.
Jurgen Klopp, manager of Liverpool in the post-match conference said that “Overall it was a really good performance. These two legs are like a normal game. The first half is played and now we have a bit longer than 15 minutes to prepare for the second half.”
Liverpool dominated the whole game by not only having 59% possession but also coming up with a total no. of 58 dangerous attacks.
Though, the scoreline didn’t tell much since one cannot predict what’s going to happen in football but the style of play of Klopp’s side showed that they’re again going to be ruthless in the second half and won’t let Porto come in their way.
Score: Liverpool 2 – 0 Porto
MOTM: Roberto Firmino.
Estadio do Dragao (2nd Leg)
Porto was having scars from last year’s ruthless defeat of 5 – 0 on their own home ground. And if Porto could knockout Liverpool out of the competition, it would have been the best revenge.
But unfortunately, the Red Devils didn’t let this happen and gave more scars to the Portuguese side by netting in goals again and again. First Sadio Mane (26’), then Salah (65’), then Firmino (77’) and at the end Van Dijk (84’). No doubt Eder Militao scored at the 69th minute for the Portuguese side but that wasn’t enough as it was too late.
Sadio Mane has scored in each and every Champions League knockout round he’s ever played. There’s no stopping Sadio Mane.
No doubt Porto dominated by having 52% possession and 51 dangerous attacks but they couldn’t convert anyone of it and again got knocked out of the tournament with an aggregate of 6 – 1. These two legs showed that the Reds are merciless and other teams should be aware of what they were going to face.
Score: Liverpool 4 – 1 Porto (Aggregate: 6 – 1)
MOTM: Sadio Mane.
Now, Liverpool will face Barcelona in the semi final on 2nd and 8th of May.
